Tell us about Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.

Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia is a leading hunger relief organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity across a 21-county region in Coastal Georgia. Since our founding, we’ve worked tirelessly to provide nutritious food to people in need while advocating for sustainable solutions to end hunger. Our mission is to feed those who are hungry and help end hunger in our community by distributing millions of pounds of food each year, supporting local food pantries, and creating innovative programs that empower our neighbors.

What are some of the programs Second Harvest offers to the community?

We offer a variety of programs designed to meet the unique needs of our community. Kids Cafe (originally founded in Savannah, now the second largest childhood hunger initiative) provides nutritious meals and snacks to children after school and during the summer, ensuring they receive the nourishment they need to grow and thrive. The Backpack Program is designed to provide nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to children who may not have enough to eat over the weekend. Our Mobile Food Pantry delivers fresh and shelf-stable food directly to underserved communities, making it easier for families to access healthy food. Additionally, our Senior Brown Bag Program offers monthly groceries to older adults with low income, and our Partner Market Place supports local food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters by supplying them with food and resources.

Second Harvest recently opened a state-of-the-art facility on Chatham Parkway. Tell us how the new facility will impact the community for Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.

Our new state-of-the-art facility on Chatham Parkway is a game-changer for our community. This expanded space allows us to store and distribute more food, improving our ability to meet the growing demand for hunger relief. With increased capacity, we can serve more families and individuals across Coastal Georgia, ensuring that no one in our region goes without food. The facility also includes modernized areas for volunteer activities, community engagement, and educational programs, helping us to build a stronger, more connected community dedicated to ending hunger.

In what ways can the community get involved to help fulfill Second Harvest’s mission?

There are many ways the community can get involved with Second Harvest and help us fulfill our mission to end hunger. Volunteering is a powerful way to make a difference—whether it’s packing food boxes, helping with special events, or supporting our Mobile Food Pantry distributions. Donations are also crucial, as every dollar contributes to providing meals for people in need. Additionally, participating in our events, such as food drives and fundraising campaigns, helps raise awareness and support for our cause. We encourage everyone to join us in our efforts to #HelpEndHunger—together, we can create a hunger-free Coastal Georgia.
