Savannah Clovers Secure First Home Win Of The Regular Season In Richmond Hill, Georgia
Thursday, October 19, 2023 – Richmond Hill, Georgia
After receiving a disappointing draw away this past Sunday, the Savannah Clovers were able to bounce back with a home win to their record. With goals from both Mikal Greene and Alex Ierides, the Clovers defeated the Maryland Bobcats 2-0 in front of a large crowd at Wildcat Stadium in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
Although the game ended leveled at 0-0 in the first half, in the second half, the Clovers won an early corner-kick opportunity. Ahdan Tait stepped up to take the corner and fired it at Bobcat’s goalkeeper, Brandon John. John blocked the initial shot but Greene was able to get right on the end of the rebound and blasted the ball in the back of the net bringing the Clovers up 1-0. Approximately 15 minutes later, the Clover’s offense combined through the middle to find Mason Moyers open in the box, Moyers drew his defender in to then slip a through-ball to Alex Ierides right in front of the net, Ierides received the ball and tapped it in, securing the Clovers’ 2-0 lead.
In the 61st minute of the game, a mistake by the Clovers led to a turnover causing Bobcat’s Samuel Solomon to be 1v1 in front of the goal with only goalkeeper, Jack Crichton, to beat. However, as Solomon tried to hit the ball over Crichton to equalize the game, Crichton was able to get a tip on the ball, ultimately keeping the Clover’s lead safe. Despite the Bobcat’s solid opportunities, they were no match for goalkeeper Jack Crichton and the rest of the Clover’s defense.
Wednesday was a special night for soccer in Richmond Hill with many “firsts” being delivered on the occasion. The Savannah Clovers vs Maryland Bobcats match was the first time a professional soccer team played in the town of just over 17,000 people. It was also the first time the Savannah Clovers fielded 3 homegrown players during a professional match, including the professional debut of 15-year-old Richmond Hill student Jack Proctor, who recently returned from England after attending various training sessions with recently relegated Premier League side Leeds United. Lastly, this marked a momentous occasion for the Savannah Clovers as the club was able to secure its first home win of the regular season.
